Abstract [en]

Background: Statens institutionsstyrelse (SiS) is responsible for the special youth homes in Sweden. This is where children and adolescents are placed when involuntary treatment is considered as the only alternative. Children and adolescents who are placed in SiS often have complex psychosocial problems, substance abuse problems and criminal behavior. It is a difficult target group and re-admissions are common. Previous research shows that the inclusion of young people related parties is a vital factor for the success of the treatment in order to achieve long-term results.

Aim: The aim of the study is to examine the caring staff´s experience of working with related parties´ participation in SiS.

Method: A qualitative research method was used.

Results: The results was divided into two categories. The first was named The potential of participation and had two subcategories; The importance of related parties´ and To include. The second category was named Obstruction factors and Challenges and had four subcategories; Time of treatment, Geographical distance and lack of resources, Difficulties in the family and The professionals´ obligations- law and mission.

Conclusion: It became clear that the participants had extensive experience in working with the related parties´ participation. The related parties´ are considered to be an important part of the adolescents recovery, both during the time in the institution and afterwards. The work with the unaccompanied children has open doors to expand the work with important people around the adolescent that is not in the closest family.
