Abstract [en]

Background Threats and violence is a growing problem in health care, both nationally and internationally and these situations can often lead to mental, physical and economic consequences for the victim. The district nurse is an important person for the patient and the families. Working as a district nurse means to meet different patients and their relatives in a close relationship. Sometimes these meetings means that the contact is not functioning properly and situations can develop into threats and violent that create a negative care relationship for all involved. Previous research has often focused on highlighting the experience of psychiatric care, trauma care and wards but not so often in primary care and from the district nurse's perspective.

Aim The aim of the study was to describe district nurses' experiences and consequences after threats and violence situations in primary care.

Method A qualitative content analysis was performed focused on the manifest content. Eight district nurses were included in the study.

Results The result describes that the district nurses feel insecure in the situation, they experienced feelings of not being good enough, feelings that caught off guard by the situation and feelings that they are treated in a degrading manner. Experiences like this can have negative consequences for the health and for the relationship with the patients. The results that illustrate the consequences after being exposed to threatening situations is given in expressions such as psychological stress, being filled with fear, and to always be on guard.

Conclusion The result indicates that District nurses wants to help patients in the best way, but sometimes it is not good enough, which can lead to threatening situations. Consequences of a threat was that awareness is increasing, which means trying to avoid becoming a victim again
