The prevalence and risk of pressure ulcers, in elderly patient in ordinary housing (engelsk)
Abstract [en]

Background: Pressure ulcers are usually considered a healthcare injury, which occurs in all health care activities. Despite the knowledge of that the majority of these wounds could have been prevented if preventive measures had been done.

Aim: The aim was to explore the prevalence and risk of pressure ulcers in elderly patient enrolled in the home medical care living in ordinary housing.

Method: In order to answer the purpose a descriptive, retrospective, cross-sectional study was performed based on register data from Senior Alert, based on a quantitative approach. The participants of the study consisted of 16 136 individuals, which includes all registered individual ≥ 65 years, between January 2015 and January 2016, registered with the assessment instrument Modifierad Norton or RAPS, and were enrolled in the home medical care in ordinary housing.

Results: The study showed that 11.3% of the population had a risk of developing pressure sores, and 3% of which already had a pressure ulcer. Most common pressure ulcer rate was category II, (a partial thickness skin loss) and most frequent localization was the lower back/sacrum.

Conclusion: The study shows that the populations of patients belonging to home care in ordinary housing, in several aspects are different regarding risk and incidence of pressure ulcers, compared with the county council and the municipality in general.
