Physical activity in people with mental illness (English)
Abstract [en]
Background:
Mental illness is a common disease and it often needs to be treated. Physical activity has a positive outcome in mental and physical health. Therefore, a review of the benefits of physical activity can present physical activity as an adjunct treatment for mental illness.
Aim:
The purpose of this study was to examine experiences of physical activity in individuals with mental illness.
Method:
Qualitative Literary Review with systematic literature search. Eleven qualitative studies were analyzed.
Results:
The experience of physical activity in individuals with mental illness was along with support from others perceived as something positive. The three main themes that appeared from the experience of physical activity were Enabling factors, Obstructive factors and Outcomes of physical activity.
Conclusion:
Physical activity may be of value to apply in the care of individuals with mental illness.
