Background
Overweight and obesity among children is increasing worldwide and has become one of the greatest social problems of our time. This is largely due to our modern way of living and essential in managing this problem is changes in one´s lifestyle. Nurses who encounter overweight children need to be able to identify multiple strategies and tools to help children and their parents to a healthier lifestyle.
Aim
The aim was to illuminate the children and guardians opportunity to perform a lifestyle change for overweight children
Method
A literature review of both quantitative and qualitative scientific studies was made.
Results
Both children and their parents face multiple obstacles when changing to a healthier lifestyle. Financials played a role, as well as parental obesity. Many parents defended watching television. In some cases, lack of accessibility to exercise activities was shown. Children of parents with an understanding of obesity as a health problem had higher odds of dealing with their situation. Participants' knowledge about a healthy diet was predominantly good. The results showed both satisfied and dissatisfied participants regarding their experiences of professional help.
Conclusion
Child obesity is a complex issue where the result is dependent on multiple factors. This literature study may be useful for health professionals, who work with obese and overweight children as well as their parents.
