Abstract [en]
There are multiple studies that focus on elections and how they are reported. In recent times, there have been protests caused by elections’ results. Yet, the focus on this area can be researched further but in more specific manners. The 2021 US Capitol and 2023 Brazil Congress attacks share one characteristic in common: supporters of the losing candidate in elections started a violent movement to take over the legislature as a protest. Extensive research has been done on media framing of protests and elections, including media’s ideological orientation in relation to their framings. This study develops a qualitative comparative case study on 18 articles published along the dates of the events by the American news outlet Fox News on the two events, one domestic and one foreign. The study consists of a content analysis approach with a coding procedure following an analytical framework based on Entman’s Framing Theory, the Protest Paradigm and the Lawful and Lawlessness of a protest, to understand the similarities and differences in media framing when they frame the similar events that occurs outside and inside a country. The study concludes that there are similarities in the framing objective and differences in the way the framing is approached. The US case tends to have an incoherency of lawlessness and lawfulness of the framing, whereas in the Brazil case, Fox News conducts a rather stable notion of framed lawlessness.
