Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Depending on differences in personality among individuals, we tend to deal with situations in different ways. One way to form an understanding of these types of differences is to use the five factor model where different degrees on a scale within the five personality traits is 3 presented. To deal with stressful situations, that for example comes from interactions and interrelational exchange, individuals have shown to use coping strategies. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between the variance in personality among individuals and how these handle stressful situations using coping strategies in the workplace. A quantitative study in the form of a survey with a hundred participants was conducted. The survey was made out of questions from the test “Big Five Inventory - 10” to investigate personality and questions taken from the test “Ways of Coping Questionnaire” to investigate the usage of coping strategies. After the data material was collected, correlation analyses and regression analyses was carried out to see if there was a relationship between the two phenomenons. The study showed that there were some correlations between personality and coping strategies. The correlation analysis found relations between the personality traits Extraversion, Neuroticism, Agreeableness and Conscientiousness, and coping. Furthermore, the regression analysis demonstrated a positive significant relationship between the personality trait Agreeableness and coping, however, no relationship was observed between coping and the other personality traits. Thus, the results indicated that certain personality traits have a greater impact on the coping strategies individuals employ in stressful work situations than others.
