Relatives’ experiences of the nurse’s work in palliative care at home (English)
Abstract [en]

Background: Palliative care means that the patient's disease cannot be cured, but the symptoms must be alleviated until the end of life. Being close to a patient who is being cared for palliatively at home can mean stress, anxiety and a feeling of inadequacy. Relatives are allowed to let the nurse into their home, which means a great responsibility for the nurse. A responsibility to work as a team together with relatives and the patient. Therefore, it is important for nurses to learn about relatives' experiences of the nurse's work in palliative care at home in order to obtain knowledge about how the nurse can work together with relatives.

Aim: The purpose of the study was to illustrate how close relatives experience the nurse’s work in palliative care at home.

Method: The method used was a literature study based on analysis of qualitative research, to contribute to evidence-based nursing. Eight articles were analyzed using the Friberg’s five steps model.

Results: The literature study resulted in two main categories and five sub-categories. The main categories were “When the nurse creates safety for relatives” and “The nurses’ care focused on the whole family”. It appears that close relatives appreciate when nurses are responsive, inclusive and good at talking about sensitive topics because it leads to mental well-being for the relatives.

Conclusion: The nurse has a great impact on relatives and their well-being. It is important to pay attention to relatives' experience of the nurses’ work, so that nurses can respond to them in the best way.
