Generalized trust and concern for terrorism : A quantitative correlation study (English)
Abstract [en]

Generalized trust has been named by many social scientists as part of the very fabric of democratic life –when citizens trust each other, it makes for a safer, more prosperous, and more open society. Previous research has identified how concern of terrorism might be negatively correlated with this type of trust; suggesting that it might have a damaging effect on the health of democracy. Using representative data from the 2019 national SOM-survey we test the relationship between social trust and fear of terrorism using multiple linear regression-analysis. Our result showed a weak, but statistically robust, negative correlation between the two variables (r = -.16, p < .001), which means that people who are more afraid of terrorism tend to put less trust in fellow citizens and vice versa. We discuss the implications of our results in the light of social capital theories by James S Coleman, Robert Putnam, and Bo Rothstein.
