Abstract [en]

It is hard to come by films today in which the white male or female are not the heroes or the main character. It was even harder to find a movie where more than one character of the supporting cast was a person of colour a decade ago. While there is much more representation and diversity in cinema and on television compared to back then, there are still repetitive and inaccurate tropes which are still used and which seem to not disappear despite some apparent progress. One of them is the frequent stereotyping and framing which occurs when it comes to characters who are people of color and within that frame, in particular female characters. For the past decade there has been a large amount of calls for diversity on the big screen and while females may not often be casted as the lead actors, they are still present. Nonetheless due to the fact that there is more diversity and more roles for females who are non-white in Hollywood, the question regarding whether accurate representation of the characters has risen as well. Therefore we have chosen to carry out this research and examine three films who have Asian female characters where all of them are part of the leads: ''The Great Wall'', ''XXX: The Return Of Xander Cage'' and ''Aladdin''. This thesis is a qualitative deductive study hence the data collection will take place through observation at the hand of the researchers by way of watching the chosen films. The aim is to examine and then later present the ways in which the female characters are portrayed as well as represented in these films. In particular we will analyze whether any type of stereotyping and framing occurs in any or if in all these films. There are two main questions of this study which will be ''Are the non-white female characters portrayed as "the other"? as well as ''If so, how are they stereotyped based on the idea of the cultural other, the religious other and the political other?''. The lens which will be used for the analysis is through Orientalism and at the same time the idea of ''Us'' and ''Them'' will be put into use in line with the theory. The analytical framework will be based on the concept of the cultural other, the religious other and the political other.
